HISTORY

Personages. Julià Reig i Ribó

This year's “Personages” series pays homage to one of the most important figures of the Principality of Andorra in the later 20th century: Julià Reig i Ribó. He was a businessman, a banker and a politician of great importance to the Principality, contributing to its progress and modernisation.

He was the General Councillor for the Valles de Andorra from 1948 to 1959 and elected General Syndic twice, in 1960-1966 and 1960-1978. During his term in office, he promoted the creation of Social Security and helped the country open up to the outside world, in addition to promoting political and social reforms that led to the first Constitution of Andorra in 1993.

In business, he continued the family company Tabacs Reig, which was founded in 1880 by his grandfather, Rafael Reig Sans.

He subsequently founded Banca Reig, which was directed towards funding the country’s business activities. In 2001, the bank began its merger with Banc Agrícol i Comercial d’Andorra, which would lead to the founding of the new bank Andorra Banc Grup Agrícol Reig one year later, which operates globally under the trade name Andbank.

Julià Reig’s legacy is preserved in the foundation which bears his name, the institution he understood to be “how business finds its place in the community and society in which it operates”, in the spirit that inspires his successors, sponsoring and protecting activities which arise naturally in Andorran society and serve its general interests.
