HISTORY

ITALIAN COMMUNITY. Andorran Diversity

Andorra's geographical situation, with its rugged mountainous terrain packed into a small territorial area, has not preventedit from developing into the host country it istoday. It is a country with a large community of immigrants from many different regions.

Andorra began its role as a host country in the middle of the last century with the arrival of refugeesfleeing the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent Francodictatorship. Since then, migration levels haveincreased, both in terms of the number of immigrants and the diversity of their origin. While the first immigrants were mainly from neighbouring countries such as Spain, France and Portugal, in search of political and economic stability,at present it has opened up to communities from other parts of the world that see the Principality of Andorra as an attractive place to settle, thanks to its high standard of living and positive economic situation.

An example of these communities is the Italian one, which with a population of nearlyhalf a thousand inhabitants, has been established in the Principality for many years, working in fields such as advertising, commerce or catering, among others.

For more than adecade, the AIDA association (Associazione Italiana d'Andorra) has been bringing the Italian community living in Andorra together. As well as being a space of coexistence and socialisation, the association also seeks to bring Italian culture closer to Andorran citizens.

It offers a series of activities ranging from talks on different aspects of Italian culture to lyrical opera nights.

This stamp features the portrait of one of the most important cultural and literary symbols of Italy, Dante Alighieri. The illustration, work of the Andorran artist Jordi Casamajor, is based on aportrait by Sandro Botticelli, another of thegreat geniuses of the Italian Renaissance.
