HISTORY

Anniversaries. European Year of Cultural Heritage

Under the slogan “Our heritage: where the past meets the future”, the European Union will celebrate the “European Year of Cultural Heritage” throughout 2018. This celebration will also publicise the wealth of cultural heritage in the countries taking part. Our heritage has many forms and aspects, including landscapes and monuments, customs and traditions, the collections of books and documents in archives and libraries, and works of art displayed in museums.

This celebration highlights the importance of transmitting culture so it can reach everyone in society, and the wealth and economic potential of this heritage, as well as revealing the difficulties and challenges it can face, such as the consequences of the transition to the digital sphere, the environmental pressure on heritage sites, and the smuggling of cultural assets.

The Principality of Andorra is joining in this celebration with a wide-ranging programme of actions and activities, including concerts in some of Andorra’s most characteristic churches, lectures, screenings of unpublished documentaries, and several exhibitions, such as those on the writer Isabelle Sandy, the English poet and traveller James Kirkup, or the fascinating life of Pau Xavier d’Areny-Plandolit, a doctor, taxidermist and magician, the creator of several magic tricks.

These activities reveal the value of Andorra’s cultural heritage and its indissoluble links with the cultural heritage of Europe, raising awareness of the European history and values that strengthen our European identity.

The stamp depicts a skyline with many of Andorra’s distinctive monuments against a blue background, based on the institutional image of the Govern d’Andorra to celebrate the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage.
