HISTORY

ART. CONTEMPORARY ART. Pep Aguareles

A fateful 20 January 2019 saw the sudden death of the Andorran photographer Pep Aguareles, ending the artistic career of a figure whose subtle and keen sensitivity found its expression through the audiovisual arts, mainly photography, with incursions too into videoart.

His meticulous and extremely perfectionist work sought to focus on the smallest detail in controlling the exposure and composition of the shot, playing with light, reflections and shadows, to develop an occasionally abstract, pictorialist photography, which enabled him to express all his sensitivity in deeply poetically charged images.

His work received various awards including first prize at the 1996 edition of Nit de l’Art and the prize for best Off collection at the 2002 edition of the Perpignan Visa Pour l’Image International Photojournalism Festival.

He headed several artistic projects throughout his life, mostly relating to photography but also to video art, such as Paradise Consumer Group, which sought to promote the cultural relations of small European states. One of his most notable projects wasRetrats, músics, Andorra, which was created in collaboration with his students Lluís Casahuga, José Otero and Robert Verdaguer and launched in 2017, where he combined music and images with interviews with musicians.

Born in Andorra in 1965, he began his training as a photographer in 1983 at the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de la Generalitat de Catalunya and followed this with advertising photography, from 1988 to 1989. He began his professional career at two photographic studios in Barcelona: the Jordi Moragues advertising photography studio and later in the Jordi Blancafort fashion studio.

On his return to Andorra, he became an official photographer of the Govern until 1992, when he became a teacher at the Escola d’Art del Comú d’Andorra la Vella, where from 2016 he combined teaching with running the school.
