Philately commemorates the Hundredth Anniversary of the Ebre Observatory with this stamp issue which depicts the building and logo of the centenary.
The Observatory was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1904 with the purpose of studying the interaction of the physical phenomena that take place between the Sun and the Earth. It is located in Roquetes (Tarragona) next to the estuary of the Ebro river and is the most important in our country in this field of investigation. The continuity and fidelity of the observations throughout these 100 years have made the records in its archives have an inestimable scientific value. Amongst these stand out the seismic and ionospheric funds as the largest in Spain; the meteorological ones that date back from 1880 and a vast collection of photographs from the solar Photosphere. The centre counts with the most advanced techniques and instruments for measuring the geophysical variables, its lines of investigation related to the regional modelling of the geomagnetic field, the ionospheric variability and the studies of seismic attenuation amongst others are published in the centre's own publications, specialised magazines, congresses and doctoral thesis. Its archivist funds as well as its specialised library , constitute one of the best doted in Europe in its area and it can be considered as unique. The Ebre observatory is constituted as a non profit Foundation , governed by a trust. It is associated to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas and to the Ramón Llull University as a university institute. Currently the Foundation's trust is also represented by the National Geographic Institute and the departments of Enviroment, Unniversities, Investigation and Information; Public Works and Terrorial policy of the Cataluña government , the council of Tarragona and the town halls of Roquetes and Tortosa as well as the Society of Jesus and the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas..
