The European Parliament has declared 11 March the European Day of Victims of Terrorism . This date will remain etched in everyone’s mind following the terrible attack perpetrated in Madrid, and the postal service is showing its support with the issue of a stamp as a tribute to the victims.
This brutal attack caused great alarm throughout the international community, and messages of condemnation, revulsion and indignation poured in from all corners of the globe. The President of the European Parliament, the Irishman Pat Cox, expressed his deepest sadness and feelings of pain with the following words: “ No more bombs, no more deaths. Together we will end terrorism ”. The European governing body had originally planned to declare 11 September the European Day of Victims of Terrorism, but the terrible events that occurred in Madrid led them to change the date to 11 March. The support and solidarity shown both by ordinary Spanish people and by national and international bodies and institutions have been a memorable feature following this act of violence, which has unfortunately become the largest and most bloody incident ever suffered in Europe, with 200 people from 17 different countries dead and more than 1,600 injured.
