Among the series of Diarios Centenarios is a stamp dedicated to the Diario de Burgos , showing the image of the person announcing the launch of the newspaper, a figure inspired by a bronze statue by the artist Segundo Escolar on a background showing the Casa Consistorial at the end of the 18th century, a neoclassical building on the site of the old Carretas gate.
The Diario de Burgos , an evening newspaper which soon began to be published in the mornings, appeared for the first time on 1st April 1891. It was edited by Juan Albarellos Berroeta, a lawyer, who ran it until his death in 1922. Since then, those responsible for running the publication have been professionals and distinguished individuals including Ignacio Albarellos, Esteban Sáenz Alvarado, Andrés Ruiz Valderrama and the current director and academic, Vicente Ruiz de Mencía. During the first century of its life, the newspaper belonged to the Albarellos family, until it was purchased by a group of industrialists in 1991, whose majority shareholding is held by the businessman Antonio Méndez Pozo. The newspaper took advantage to change the design, sections and columns and consolidated development with the purchase of a new colour rotary press, which was installed in the printing plant. However, a new era in information began in June 2000 with the inclusion of new sections and content. The Diario de Burgos , which belongs to the Promecal group, a leading company in the media industry in the Castilla-León region, which owns three newspapers and two local television channels in the region and seven other newspapers in Castilla La Mancha, has become the second biggest selling newspaper in Castilla-León in the 113 years since it was founded, and leads the market in coverage and sales in the province of Burgos. It has offices in Aranda de Duero, Miranda de Ebro, Briviesca, Merindades and Valladolid. This newspaper, which holds the City (1983) and Province (1991) gold medals, among other important awards, has included a weekly column dedicated to information about new stamp issues and stamp collecting every week since 1979.
