With this issue made up of eight self-adhesive stamps devoted to the road to Santiago, Spanish philately joins the celebration of the Jacobean Saint Year 2004. When, at the end of the VIII century, news spread that the tomb of the apostle James had been found in Galicia, the first Christians from beyond the Pyrenees began to travel to Santiago de Compostela to venerate his mortal remains. This is how an initiation path began founded on the Christian ideal of life. Together with the pilgrims new ideas and artistic expressions were introduced and the Jacobean path turned to be the main stream for economic and cultural renovation.
In this context, Romanic art turns out to be the first artistic expression in which take part the different territories of western Christian Europe. From the XI and XII centuries, Romanic art will be the common style to them all and the road to Santiago its main way of diffusion. The original kingdom of Aragon with Jaca as its capital city and thriving centre will be one of the entrance doors to Spain of this new art. The different artistic works that remain from this medieval period tell us of the creative splendour that gathered artists, artisans and patrons in this small piece of land.
