The Meditterranean Games Almería 2005 and the centenaries of the foundations of the Sevilla and the Real Sporting de Gijón S.A.D. football clubs make up the Sports series which is issued on the 1st March. The Mediterranean games arose of an initiative from the Egiptian Taher Pacha as a symbol of peace amongst countries of the Mediterranean basin. The XV edition whose logo is depicted in the stamp will take place next summer in Almería. It will host 24 types of sports and 4000 sportsmen and women will participate from southern Europe, North of Africa, Lebanon and Syria.
The history of the Sevilla football club begins on the 14th October 1905 with the approval of its regulations. Its uniform is white with a red vertical stripes on the shirts, trunks and stockings. It’s stadium, the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuan, which seats 45,500 spectators was inaugurated in 1958. From the foundation of the National League Championship in the 1928-29 season, Sevilla has lived many a glorious moment such as the winning of the league in 1945-46 and being four times runner up. It has won the Copa de España three times and has been second twice. During ten seasons it has also won the Copa de Andalucía and its players have been part of the national team many times.
The Real Sporting de Gijón wears a red and white vertical striped t-shirt, blue trunks and blue stockings with a red turn. This year on occasion of its hundredth anniversary, it bears its logo on its t-shirt. Its stadium, El Molinón, which seats 5,885 people was inaugurated in 1908 and has witnessed the greatest scores of the team: 7-1 against Osasuna in 1993-94, and 6-0 against Oviedo in 1944-45. The Club was founded by Anselmo López under the name of Sporting Gijonés and amongst its most important events are the following: Presidency of Honour by King Alfonso XIII in 1912, Played in the 1st Division league in 1944 and from this year onwards it has played in both first and second divisions. It has participated on six occasions in the UEFA cup; in 1979 it was runner-up in the League and twice runner-up in the King’s Cup. In 1992 it became a Sports Company and changed its name to Real Sporting de Gijón S.A.D.
