HISTORY

On occasion of the Euromediterranean Summit (Euromed) which takes place in Barcelona on the 27 and 28 of November, a stamp is issued to evidence the importance of this meeting between the countries of the Mediterranean basin.

The Euromediterranean Summit is for the first time this year called “summit” due to the attendance of Heads of State and Government. It is the tenth time it meets since 1995 when it was founded in Barcelona with the attendance of the Foreign Affairs Secretaries of the countries members of the organisation .The aim of the summit is to establish “ a common example of open regionalism between the European Union and the countries of the southern Mediterranean shores, in order to create, by common consent, an area of political stability and economic prosperity.” It is expected that representatives from more than 40 countries will attend the Euromed summit amongst which are 25 from the European Union, Bulgaria and Rumania and all countries from the southern Mediterranean region including Israel and the Palestinian National Authority. Libya will attend as a permanent observer. Aiming at improving the neighbourhood policy and deal with major problems such as the rise of international terrorism, the massive immigration wave and the continuous conflicts in the Middle East , several proposals such setting up a European network of police and judicial cooperation to fight against terrorism and organized delinquency will be discussed. With regards to stability in Africa, a special emphasis will be made in the migration phenomenon, adopting joint measures between the member countries. The Euromediterranean summit will take place in the International Convention Centre in Barcelona, an emblematic venue where last year took place the Forum de las Culturas de Barcelona 2004. The stamp depicts a picture of the city and the official logo of the meeting.
