HISTORY

On the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the 2nd Republic and the 70th Anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, parliament has passed a bill Ley 24/2006 of July 7th declaring 2006 as “A year of Historical Memory” and urging the Government, through the National Printing House, to issue stamps and other postage effects in whose development will collaborate society. For this reason, Correos has included in its web page several images for people to vote for their favourite. The two most voted for designs will be issued as stamps and the two runner ups as labels.

In the preliminary recitals of the Law it is stated that after more than 25 years of democratic coexistence and the role played by the Spanish Constitution as an instrument of concord and union, the historic moment has been approached as a means of approaching the future in coexistence and stating “ It is thus a timely moment to remember and honour those who struggled to achieve a democratic regime in Spain, to those who suffered the consequences of the civil conflict and to those who fought against the dictatorship in defence of freedom and the basic and fundamental rights which we enjoy today”.

The Law’s only article declares 2006 as Year of Historical Memory “paying homage and acknowledgement to all men and women victims of the civil war and to all those who later on suffered Franco’s repression, for their defence of the principles and democratic values as well as to those who with their effort towards fundamental rights, public liberties and reconciliation between Spaniards, made possible the change to a democratic regime with the 1978 Constitution”.
