This issue devoted to Archaeology is made up of three stamps depicting two archaeological sites: Los Millares (Almeria), L’Alcudia- Ilici (Elche, Alicante) and the statue of El Guerrer de Moixent (Valencia). The stamp of Los Millares depicts an aerial panoramic view of the site; the stamp devoted to L’Alcudia shows part of a pottery vase and finally the one devoted to Moixent, depicts an Iberian sculpture known as El Guerrer.
The archaeological site of Los Millares is the most important one in Europe from the copper age. The ruins are located in the towns of Santa Fe de Mondujar and Gador, in Almería (Andalucia). The development of Los Millares came about with the rise of agriculture and cattle breeding during the Neolithic Age. This settlement was made up of a necropolis with a hundred megalithic tombs, four defence lines and thirteen small strongholds.The stamp has a face value of 0,29 €.
The archaeological site of L’Alcudia also known as the Ilici ruins, is located near the town of Elx (Elche), and it’s also one of the most important sites of the Iberian Peninsula. It was amongst these ruins that was discovered the famous Dama de Elche. The town of Ilici has ruins of the Bronze Age of the following periods: Iberian, Punic-Iberian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Visigoth. The scene featuring in the stamp is representative of the Iberian culture. The stamp has a postal rate of 0,57 €.
The Guerrer de Moixent, is one of the most representative and valuable pieces of Iberian sculpture. The small bronze statue, representing a warrior on a horse, dates back from the IV-III century and measures 77cm. This exceptional piece was found in the Iberian settlement of Bastida de les Alcuses, Moixent. The Guerrer is nowadays in the Museum of Prehistory of Valencia. The stamp has a face value of 0,78 €
