HISTORY

In Spanish music, their names speak for themselves: Ana Belén, Victor Manuel and Miguel Rios, three consecrated musicians to whom philately devotes a souvenir sheet issued during the World Philatelic Exhibition.

Singer Ana Belén, artistic name for Maria Pilar Cuesta Acosta, made her first public appearance as a young girl in a radio contest in the early sixties. Since then, she has been working as singer and actress appearing in more than 40 films, 11 television series and 22 plays. She has recorded more than 40 albums and has received more then 40 awards. El hombre del piano, Solo le pido a Dios and España camisa blanca are some of her most famous songs. With her husband Victor Manuel, they reached the first positions in the charts with the songs La Muralla and La Puerta de Alcalá. Victor Manuel was born in Mieres (Asturias) and began to be known with El Cobarde, a controversial song at the time. In 1969 he reached the top of the charts with songs referring to the region where he was born: La Romeria and El Abuelo Victor. He has always publicly identified himself with the left wing and for several years was banned from public television. Amongst his vast musical productions stand out: Quiero abrazarte tanto, Soy un corazón tendido al sol, A donde irán los besos or El hijo del ferroviario in which he stands out as composer. The history of Spanish Rock and Roll cannot be understood without Miguel Rios. Great admirer of Elvis Presley and the rock stars of the time, he always dreamed of becoming a rock star himself. He became famous in 1967 with El río and Vuelvo a Granada, but it was a couple of years later when he became famous worldwide with the Himno a la alegría, an adaptation of Beethoven’s ninth symphony. He was number 1 in the charts with Santa Lucía and with the double Lp Rock and Rios at the beginning of the 80’s – making Spanish rock known throughout the world - . Miguel Rios is a legend in this type of music, perhaps because as one of his songs says: Old rock stars never die. The design study of Jesús Sánchez, has been chosen to illustrate the souvenir sheet where these three artists are depicted as well as a musician playing the guitar and the exhibition logo.
