HISTORY

Following the souvenir sheets and stamps devoted to the stained glass windows of Sevilla, Toledo, Leon , Girona, Vitoria and Avila, besides those of the Alcázar de Segovia and the Hospital Real de Santiago de Compostela, its now the turn of the Technical High School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

This beautiful window is the work of the Maumejean workshop in Madrid. Although it is a rule of this firm that none of its designers, painters and glass cutters sign their works, it is known that it was Alberto Martorell, one of the best stained glass artists of the XX century, the author of the sketches of this outstanding art work. Besides this window of the Technical High School of the Polytechnic University, he is also the author of the exceptional windows of the Bank of Spain. The Casa Maumejean Hermanos, whose workshop was founded in 1860, had also establishments in Paris and Madrid. In Spain, it became the most important glass workshop of the XIX century, especially when the brothers Enrique and José Maumejean settled down here. From the Casa Maumejean are several windows in different buildings in Madrid such as the: Blanca de Castilla school, the Prensa Española building and private homes in the Gran Via and Alfonso XII streets and also those in the hall, stairs and main room of the Banco de España (Bank of Spain). Also in Barcelona and Cataluña there are various works by the Maumejean brothers such as the windows of Caixa Sabadell and the Casa Pérez Samanillo as well as various Spanish cathedrals in which they have done restoration works in old windows. In new ones the’ve used an eclectic style. The souvenir sheet that makes up this issue depicts the stained glass window in whose composition there are references to architecture and construction. The figures are mainly Art Deco and the aesthetic composition is of a modernist style. De esta hoja bloque se realizó una Prueba de color .
