HISTORY

An interesting way of getting to know our heritage when it comes to monumental trees is to resort to stamps, since the Spanish Post yearly devotes an issue to those trees whose condition (unique species, outstanding size, history or legend etc…) deserve to be catalogued or classified as such. Amongst the significant species that have featured in stamps are: the holm oak, the ahuehuete, the cypress and now the pine tree. This latter, is represented by a tree in the grounds of the Fuentepiña house, home to poet and literature Nobel prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez.

The Fuentepiña pine tree (19,50 m high and 3,80 m of perimeter at a height of 1,30 m and 6,10 m at the base) is not the biggest in Spain but, besides its considerable size its importance lies in its meaning in Juan Ramón Jimenez’s literature. Moreover since in the poet’s imagination and literary recreation, the famous donkey Platero, main character of his famous work, Platero y yo, is said to be buried under the Fuentepiña pine tree giving it a universal importance although only fruit of literary fiction. The Fuentepiña pine tree is located in the beautiful landscapes around Moguer (Huelva) and because of its link to the literary scenario and the work of Juan Ramón Jiménez, has been declared as property of cultural significance classified as historic site by the government of Andalucía.
