The Adelantado de Segovia, has been published practically without interruption since its foundation in 1901 and its masterhead is now depicted in a stamp.
It was lawyer, Senator and MP Rufino Cano de Rueda who purchased the masthead of the weekly paper El Adelantado in 1901 , which had been published without interruption since 1880. After the purchase by Rufino Cano, it became a daily newspaper. In 1902 it merged with El Diario de Avisos. The venture was not at all fruitful and the Adelantado changed its name to El Adelantado de Segovia in order to give it a more local orientation. From the on, its two main aims were to become a platform and forum for public debate in the most relevant issues of Segovia and its province and to become a modern company according to the new times. Many have been the vicissitudes throughout the 105 years of history of El Adelantado de Segovia. The milestones have been the purchase in 1930 of technologically advanced machinery which was in use until 1969 when a new offset rotary press was installed; the renewal of the newspaper’s contents in the following years and the publishing of supplements; in 1984 it works with important contributors such as Delibes, Francisco Ayala and Vargas LLosa and in 1988 the paper joins the ICAL (Information on Castilla y León). The Adelantado de Segovia underwent a revolutionary change when it published a morning newspaper in 1994. Its process of modernisation has continued until today. In fact the digital edition came out in 1996 becoming the first paper in Castilla y León on the Internet. In 1997 it enlarged its premises in the industrial park of El Cerro and the number of readers, advertisers and subscribers increased in number. Currently 25% of the paper belongs to the Cano family of the Promecal group and the editor in chief since 2006 is Jesús Martínez Calle. The Adelantado de Segovia is an essential documentary reference to get to know the history of Segovia in the past XX century.
