A stamp is issued within the Centenary Newspapers series on occasion of the 120 Anniversary of the La Rioja newspaper. The stamp depicts the silhouette of a street vendor with the number 120 over a red background and the years 1889-2009.
This newspaper was founded in Logroño on the 15th January 1889 and had its headquarters in the commonly known as Casa del Correo. The founder of this paper, Facundo Martínez Zaporta, had in previous years began to print El Comercio every two weeks and when it began to be published on a daily basis, it changed its name to La Rioja. Since the very beginning, this newspaper defined itself as impartial, free and with no submission to any type of pressure. La Rioja became a daily newspaper on December 28th 1920 and began to print using a Koëning and Baüer. On the 1st of October 1938, during the Civil War, the paper changed its denomination to Nueva Rioja for political reasons changing back its name in July 1981. La Rioja informs of the events taking place in the autonomous region, in Spain and throughout the world. It is the masthead of a regional multimedia group with interests in the radio, television and internet business with the social aim of keeping people informed. It was awarded in June 2004 the Medalla de la Rioja by the regional government in acknowledgement to its work in favour of the people of La Rioja.
