SEGURIDAD VIAL

HISTORY

This stamp devoted to Road Safety makes an explicit reference to alcohol and speed, stressing the responsibility of every driver when using a car.

Official data reveal that alcohol and excess of speed are the main causes for road traffic crashes. For this reason, the Direccion General de Tráfico (DGT) (the department in charge of traffic) and the governing authorities launch continuous campaigns aiming at educating drivers in the perils of drink driving and the infringement of traffic regulation. Slogans such as The only safe Blood Alcohol Concentration is 0,0 % or Whatever your age, drive with 0 alcohol are some of the campaigns launched by the DGT aiming at making drivers aware and specially young ones of the perils of drink driving. The legislative reforms introduced in the past years increasing control over excess of speed and typifying offences against road safety have helped reduce accident and death rates. The Ley de Circulacion Urbana e Interurbana (Road Traffic Law) regulating the driving license and the penalty point system combines two main elements; on the one side re-educating reoffending drivers with road education programmes and on the other introducing the penalty points system for driving offences. These points, as it is established by the law “represent the level of trust society awards the driver and whose loss represents the rebuke offending conducts deserve…” Other major factors to increase road safety are the improvement of infrastructures by the authorities and the development of road education from childhood in order to build attitudes and habits of respect towards each other.
