HISTORY

The three stamps that make up this Sports series are devoted to the European and Ibero- American Athletics Games taking place in Spain and the World Football Cup in South Africa.

The XIV Ibero-American Athletics Championship is held in San Fernando (Cádiz) from the 3 to the 6 June. Nearly 500 athletes from 29 countries will participate in the 22 male and female disciplines. The competition will take place in the Bahía Sur stadium recently restored.

The logo of the Championship is based on a racing star fish whose five arms refer to the arms and legs of an athlete. The mascot, chosen in a design competition, is the Burrito Salinero.

The European Athletics Championships first took place in 1934 in the Italian town of Turin where the best European athletes at the time gathered. This year the 20th European Athletics Championships will be held in Barcelona from July 27 to August 1 in the Olympic Stadium Lluís de Montjuïc, with a capacity for 45.000 spectators. The road events will be carried out in the streets of Barcelona. More than 1,400 athletes will be participating in 47 disciplines in the male and female categories.

The stamp depicts the official mascot, Barni, wearing a t-shirt with the official logo B10 where the capital B identifies the city of Barcelona and the number 10 the year the event will be hosted, and also the top score athletes can attain.

The XIX World Football FIFA Cup South Africa 2010 taking place from June 11 to July 11 will be held in ten different stadiums throughout South Africa and the final will be played in Johannesburg. 32 teams have qualified and will play in two classifying rounds.

The stamp depicts the official logo representing a football player over the map of the African continent in the colours of the South African flag.
