HISTORY

This year’s definitive series is made up of four stamps depicting the portrait of King Juan Carlos I.

He is King of the Spanish people as he himself proclaimed on the 22nd November 1975. Defender of democracy and the constitutional values, the figure of Don Juan Carlos I as head of state is well known to all and he has always been very much aware of the social and cultural development of all regions. He is regularly in touch with universities, foundations and academies and promotes the development of new technologies, investigation, sport and culture in all its proceedings.

The link of King Juan Carlos I to philately goes back to the very moment he was proclaimed King. The first stamp issue in which features both H.M. Juan Carlos and Sofia dates back to December 25th 1975 and since then, on request of Correos, the monarch signs a sheet of every stamp issued. The King’s collection of signed sheets is part of the collection of the Postal and Telegraphic Museum in Madrid and they are exhibited in those exhibitions in which Correos participates. King Juan Carlos I, whenever requested, also presides over the Committee of Honour of prestigious national philatelic exhibitions.

The first definitive series ever issued dates back to the 15th July 1976 and up till now five different series with five different portraits have been issued. This current one is part of a series started in 2007.
