The Royal Spanish Football Federation approved in 1920 the creation of a National Team to participate in the Olympic Games in Antwerp (Belgium). For about a month the national teams of the 16 participating countries have competed in the playing fields with merit and sportsmanship to win the trophy. The final match was played between Spain and Italy in the Olympic Stadium in Kiev (Ukraine) before 60,000 spectators, with the result 4-0 in favour of Spain. With this victory the Spanish team became the first to achieve a triplet; the Eurocup 2008, World Cup 2010 and Eurocup 2012.

The Spanish National Football Team was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports in 2010 in recognition of its sporting merit.
