In January a stamp was issued on occasion of the 23 Handball World Men’s Championship held in Spain and a few months later, a one stamp Souvenir Sheet is issued dedicated to the world champions: the Spanish National Handball Team.

The souvenir sheet is illustrated with a photograph of the Spanish team bearing the champion’s medal. The stamp depicts a hand holding up the team ball and the caption: XXIII World Championship Men's Handball.

On January 27 2013, the Spanish National Men's Handball Team was proclaimed world champion in the 23rd edition of the men’s handball. The final match was played between Spain and Denmark resulting in 35-19 in favour of Spain, the biggest margin in a World Championship final.

The match took place in the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona with the attendance of 14,000 spectators in the pavilion and around three and a half million tv viewers. In a memorable encounter the Spanish team displayed a show of collective game based on companionship, technique and sportsmanship.

This is the second time Spain wins the title of world champion in handball final. The first was in Tunisia in 2005. In the 2011 World Cup in Sweden Spain won the bronze medal. In addition to these titles the Spanish National Men's Handball Team has won three bronze medals at the Olympic Games: Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Beijing (2008). It has also won three silver medals and one bronze in the European Championships.

After the victory achieved by the Spanish team, King Juan Carlos received its members in the Palacio de la Zarzuela, Madrid, where they were presented with the Gold Medal to the Sporting Merit.
