HISTORY

The lottery is one of the oldest and most popular games of chance organised by the State. It was adopted in Spain in 1763, during the reign of Carlos III, and to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Creation of State Lotteries and Bets, a stamp is issued, illustrated with the characteristic rotating drum.

The Original Lottery and the Modern or National Lottery coexisted until 1862, when the former was abolished. In 1985, the Original Lottery was reintroduced and it remains popular to this day.

With the passing of the years, special lotteries were gradually introduced, the most important being the Christmas Lottery and the Epiphany Lottery. Other one-off or special lotteries have been organised for the reconstruction of cities, for exhibitions or social assistance. Thus, in 1924, the Red Cross lottery was organised for the first time.

Other current state-run games of chance are: the Bonoloto, the EuroMillions, the Gordo de la Primitiva and the Football Pools, among others
