PEOPLE. PRESIDENTS OF THE GOVERNMENT OF SPAIN
Adolfo Suárez González was born in Cebreros (Ávila), on 25 September 1932. He graduated in Law from the University of Salamanca (1953) and years later he completed a PhD at the Complutense University of Madrid. In July 1976, King Juan Carlos I appointed him President of the Government. Right from the start, Suárez began a dialogue with the political forces and those fighting to restore democracy. During this time, the Political Reform Law was approved, paving the way for the first democratic elections after the legalisation of political parties.
As the leader of the UCD (Union of the Democratic Centre)he was victorious in the first free elections, held on 15 June 1977. During this period, and after long negotiations with the other democratic parties, the Spanish Constitution was drawn up and approved by means of a popular referendum on 6 December 1978.
On 3 March 1979, Adolfo Suárez again won the election and he thus formed the first constitutional government until 29 January 1981 when he resigned.On 23 February 1981 and during the investiture of Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo as President of the Government, Suárez played an exemplary role during the attempted coup d'état.
That year, the King granted him the title of Duke of Suárez for his work during the transition. In 1982, he left the UCD and founded the CDS (Social and Democratic Centre), and he was duly elected as a member of parliament. He finally withdrew from politics in 1991.
