HISTORY

CONTEMPORARY ART. JAUME PLENSA

Jaume Plensa was born in Barcelona in 1955. He is a highly multifaceted artist, sculptor and engraver who has also experimented with drawing and scenography.
He studied in the Llotja School and in the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts.
He started moulding iron using casting technology, forming zoomorphic shapes and later moved on to use glass, resins and even lights and sounds.
He also took part in designing and creating pieces and props for opera and theatre stages, mainly for the company La Fura dels Baus.
One of his most important and characteristic works is the sculpture entitled “Alma de Ebro” (The Soul of the Ebro), which he created for the International Water Exhibition that was held in Zaragoza in 2008. The piece is 11 metres tall and is located in front of the Conference Centre, on the bank of the river Ebro.
In 2012 he was awarded the National Graphic Arts Prize by the National Calcography, earning him recognition for his career as an artist in the field of graphic art.
He has exhibited works in many countries, such as France, the United States, Sweden and Germany, receiving significant recognitions in all of them.
The block sheet dedicated to the artist depicts an image of Madison Square Park in New York, a very busy park in the skyscraper city where people usually sit down to sunbathe or have a chat. It was here in this park that one of the Catalan artist's sculptures entitled “Echo” was exhibited in 2011. The piece features the head of a girl, 13 and a half metres high, made with fibreglass resin and coated in marble gel. It was inspired by the nymph Echo from Greek mythology, a nymph who lost her voice and was doomed to repeat the words of others.
According to the artist, the face of the sculpture is based on a nine year old girl, who is the daughter of the owner of a restaurant located close to his house in Barcelona.
The stamp completing the block sheet includes an image of the sculpture as its main theme.
