CENTENARY NEWSPAPERS

The Diario de Avisos is the oldest printed newspaper in the Canary Islands. It was set up in Santa Cruz de la Palma in 1890 where it was published until 1976, when it was relocated to Santa Cruz de Tenerife where it continues to be published today. It is one of the most important newspapers in the province.
In 1999, new printing presses were installed. This represented a turning point for the history of the newspaper because it enabled the introduction of colour into its publications. It also encouraged the inclusion of weekend supplements, which led to a considerable increase in circulation.
The Diario de Avisos is committed to providing the best and most varied local, national and international information, maintaining its position as one of the newspapers with the largest readerships.
The newspaper celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2015 and for this reason created the Taburiente Awards, which were aimed at paying tribute to those figures from various areas of cinema, music and science whose work and success carry the name of the Canary Islands to the highest echelons of society.
The stamp being issued now aims to commemorate this anniversary by depicting the front page of the newspaper with its header and showing the image of a young newsvendor of times gone by holding a copy of the Diario de Avisos. The background is printed in blue - to represent the sea - and dotted with some of the islands that make up the Canary Islands archipelago. The logo for the 175th anniversary completes the image.
