In 2015 and 2016, Spain has a seat on the United Nations Security Council. After an absence of ten years, it has returned as a non-permanent member and will work towards keeping the peace, fighting against poverty, ensuring international security and defending human rights.

The seat is not just a question of principles, but also an opportunity for Spain to raise its international profile, achieve bilateral agreements with other countries and obtain firsthand knowledge of the most important geostrategic affairs.

The UN Security Council currently consists of five permanent members: China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia and the United States, and ten non-permanent members: Venezuela, New Zealand, Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania, Spain, Nigeria, Angola and Malaysia.

Spain is proving that it is a country committed to solving global problems, willing to face the challenges arising in the international community.

Spain's objectives for these two years include promoting a complete reform of the UN Security Council, in order to make it more representative, balanced and accessible. It will defend the proposal that there should be a greater number of non-permanent seats, with a fair geographical distribution, and that the mandates should be longer.

During this period, Spain will chair three highly-relevant peace-keeping and international security committees: “the 1540 Committee” concerning the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the “1718 Sanctions Committee” concerning North Korea and the “1737 Iran Sanctions Committee”.

Correos is issuing a stamp to commemorate this event, showing the candidacy campaign logo, where the national colours of red and yellow predominate.
