HISTORY

JEREZ, WORLD MOTORCYCLING CAPITAL 2015/2017

Jerez de la Frontera is the first city in the world to be chosen by the Federation of International Motorcycling (FIM) as the World Motorcycling Capital 2015/2017.

Jerez is nationally and internationally famous in the world of motor sports. Since the opening of its permanent circuit in 1985, Formula 1 and motorcycle grand prix races have been held there.

Every year, thousands of fans invade the city to see the Spanish Grand Prix, which has become the biggest motor sport event in the Iberian peninsula.

Jerez's nomination as World Motorcycling Capital makes the city famous all over the world, not only for its sporting events, but also as a city full of culture and tradition.

The city's relationship with motor sports goes back to 1956, when urban races were already being held in the city, in spite of not having a permanent circuit. The first races to be held were national ones, but international competitions began in 1963, when the first “Trofeo Internacional Nuestra Señora de la Merced” Grand Prix was held.

Once construction of the permanent circuit was completed, the dream of Jerez and its people of becoming the "Cathedral of Motorcycling" was fulfilled, and its nomination as the World Motorcycling Capital is a much-deserved reward after so many years of effort and dedication to the sport.

The stamp aims to transmit the idea of Jerez as the capital of motorcycling and depicts a moving motorcycle whose slipstream is in the shape of the city. The sheet emphasises the duality between Jerez and motor sports, combining the image of a motorcycle and a horse, an undeniable symbol of the city. There is also an overlapping chequered flag that typically indicates the end of motor races.
