MUSEUMS

As in previous years, Correos is issuing its Museums series, with the aim of promoting the country's museums and its major collections. The stamps are presented in Pliego Premium miniature sheets and show images of the buildings and some of their most representative exhibits.

The Museum of Natural Sciences (Museo de Ciencias Naturales) dates back to 1771, when King Carlos III founded the Royal Cabinet of Natural History. After occupying various sites, it moved to its present location in the former Palacio de la Industria y de las Artes in 1910. Its name was changed to the National Museum of Natural Sciences in 1913. The museum has over six million exhibits in its permanent collection, divided into three sections: Natural History, the Mediterranean Sea and the third section, which is a reproduction of the former Royal Cabinet of Natural History.

MACBA, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona), was founded in 1995 and is now internationally recognised as a model for contemporary art. The museum building was designed by Richard Meier and was conceived as an articulation of various prisms. The collection includes exhibits from the Material Abstraction of the 1950s, the vanguards of the 1960s and 1970s and photographic figuration, bringing together artists from all over the world.

The Valencia Institute of Modern Art (Institut Valencià d´Art Modern) was founded 1986 with the aim of discovering, fostering and disseminating modern and contemporary art. It is located in the Julio González Centre, which conserves the remains of the city's old medieval fortress in its basement. The permanent collection contains exhibits of very important artistic heritage, with pieces that include historic artistic vanguards from the first half of the 20th century to the beginning of this century. One of the most significant sections is the Julio González collection, whose sculpture Mujer ante el espejo [Woman in front of a Mirror], is the image chosen for this stamp.
