TOWNS WITH CHARM

Correos is issuing this series for the first time in order to emphasise the wide variety of charming towns in Spain and to promote the country's geographical heritage.

These are self-sticking stamps that emulate the old series of postcards folded in a concertina format, where the back of the stamp is also printed, as if it were the back of a postcard.

The towns chosen for this first issue are: Albarracín, Alcalá del Júcar, La Alberca and Santillana del Mar. Later series will include other towns that are also considered to be the most charming towns in Spain.

Albarracín is a medieval town in the province of Teruel, located on a hill in the Montes Universales range. It gets its charm from the layout of its streets, which is perfectly adapted to the complex contours of the terrain. Its most striking characteristics are its buildings, its irregular reddish walls and its wooden structures.

The town of Alcalá del Júcar is located in the province of Albacete. It boasts a 12th century castle and a parish church with a Late-Gothic dome. The Roman Bridge, over the Júcar river that gives the town its name, was part of the Royal Road from Castilla to Levante and became a dry port or customs post.

La Alberca in Salamanca has medieval architecture and cobbled streets, whitewashed, timber-framed facades and flowered balconies. It was the first Spanish municipality to be declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in Spain.

The Cantabrian town of Santillana del Mar has an extraordinary architectural heritage. It has religious buildings of great value, such as the collegiate church of Santa Juliana, which was originally a monastery where the Saint's relics were laid to rest. The town was built around the monastery and is full of medieval and Renaissance buildings of great historic value.
