TOURISM

The tourism sector in Spain is one of the most important driving forces behind economic development in the country, which has become a favourite destination for both foreign and Spanish tourists. Thanks to the climate, gastronomy, broad cultural offer and excellent infrastructure, tourism in Spain is growing at an unstoppable pace.

With that in mind, stamps help spread tourism in Spain by including images that focus on this issue. The images on stamps provide important information on the countries that issue them and can awaken a desire to discover more about what they represent, not only among collectors but also the general public.

In the mid-1960s, a series on tourism was launched that highlights various landscapes and monuments to be found in Spain. Years later, tourism remains an important topic for stamps with the issue of numerous series that focus on such topics as castles or the National Parador hotels.

Since 2010, Correos has been issuing a series entitled Tourism that especially focuses the Spain Brand on the art, gastronomy, customs and traditions that could attract people from around the world, thus helping to raise awareness about the best of Spain.

The current issue presents two stamps that highlight seaside and mountain tourism. The first evokes coastal tourism with the sea, the yacht and the sunshade. Art and culture are symbolised by the column, the book and the paintbrush. The image is made complete with a wine glass to represent Spanish wine.

The second stamp reflects inland tourism with the image of a mountain range on the shores of a lake. Adventure tourism is symbolised by a paraglider, while such mountain sports as hiking and cycling are also represented. The increasingly popular concept of rural tourism is reflected in the stone façade and clay pot that evoke inland gastronomy.
