HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS, 12 PROVINCES. SORIA

The series 12 months, 12 stamps, 12 provinces moves on to the province of Soria. This stamp will be used as a single type of postage for all parcels sent from the post offices in the featured province. As with the other stamps in the series, the province is represented with the letters SO, in reference to the old vehicle number plates in Spain. The space within the letters shows significant elements of the province.
Horse fibula. At the ancestral site of Numancia, a bronze piece was found dating back to the 2nd century BC, thought to be a brooch-like accessory used to adorn dresses. It became a symbol of Soria.
San Bartolomé chapel. This Romanesque-Proto-Gothic style chapel stands in a rocky landscape. It was built in the 12th century and was once part of the Templar Monastery of San Juan de Otero. It houses a Templar cross and a star of David.
Butter. Soria is cattle country, and its butter is exceptional. Butter in Soria is produced through a traditional production process dating back more than 100 years, which has earned it a Denomination of Origin.
Monastery of San Juan de Duero. This impressive cloister still preserves its four cross-vaults and forms part of the monastery, which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries by the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
Grey Heron. This large bird with a slender figure and long neck sweeps across the sky in this area, forming part of the landscape, and adding a touch of elegance with its flight.
Crisps. These are very traditional in the province, especially the sour-flavoured varieties. They are fried with pure olive oil, giving them an unbeatable flavour.
The stamp background features an image of the site of Numancia. The bottom part of the stamp is purple, alluding to the city’s flag. This section also includes the logo designed by Mariscal on the occasion of the 2150th anniversary of the end of the Numantine War.
