HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. CORDOBA

In May two new stamps will be added to the “12 months, 12 stamps” Correos series which began this year. Cordoba and Asturias are the provinces that will be featured on these issues, which will be the sole postage type for all parcels sent from the post offices in the featured province.
The Cordoba stamp, in line with the previous ones, is represented with the letters CO, which represent the old vehicle number plates in Spain.
The space within the letters shows significant elements of the province.
The Great Mosque of Cordoba is the most important monument in the region, a symbol of the mix of cultures of medieval Spain. It represents the architecture of Al-Andalus and is one of the most visited sites in Spain. It is an official cultural asset and a World Heritage Site.
Cordoba’s patios fill its streets with colour every spring. These courtyards date back to Roman and Arab houses, and combine whitewashed walls with the bright colours of geraniums and carnations. Water is present in fountains and spouts.
Representing fauna is the wild boar, an animal found in many areas around Spain and plentiful in the Valle de los Pedroches and the Sierra de Hornachuelos.
Another of Cordoba’s iconic symbols is the graceful and elegant hat, the sombrero cordobés, also known as a cañero or campero. It is an essential accessory to the short-jacketed riding suit that, together with the red carnation, form a traditional image of this beautiful region and an emblem of Spain.
The Montilla-Moriles white grape has its own Designation of Origin for local wines and sherries: joven, fino, amontillado and oloroso.
La Laguna de Zóñar has been a Natural Reserve since 1989 and is the only natural lake in Andalusia.
Finally, Cordoba-style salmorejo, a tomato-based dish that is eaten cold with chopped ham, egg and a healthy drizzle of virgin olive oil, another traditional product from this land of olive trees.
