HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. LAS PALMAS.

The province of Las Palmas will feature in the July edition of the 12 months, 12 stamps series.

As with previous months, this month's stamp will be used as a single type of postage for all parcels sent from the post offices in the featured province.

The stamp depicts the former vehicle registration plate letters, in this case ‘LP’, decorated with a montage of the most significant images of Las Palmas.

Las Palmas cathedral was the first churchon the Canary Islands. Its construction was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs following the conquest of Gran Canaria in 1478. It is dedicated to Saint Anne.

The canary, also known as the wild canary or Serinus canaria, is native to the area, and also found in the Azores and Madeira. Along with the Canary palm, it is one of the symbols of the archipelago.

Las Dunas de Maspalomas is a special nature reserve on the south coast of the island. With long beaches of fine sand, these dunes are a very popular tourist attraction.

The Cactus Garden in Teguise was created by César Manrique in a former quarry where volcanic rock was once extracted, and it includes more than 1,400 cacti of 1,000 different species.

The Carnival mask symbolises the most festive time of year for the Canary Islands. Colour, sparkles and artistic make-up take to the streets in an explosion of joy and celebration.

Lastly, the internationally famous bananas of the Canary Islands, which are also the only bananas in the world with a Protected Geographical Indication in recognition of their quality.

The stamp’s background shows an image of the unique, colourful Escaleritas neighbourhood of Las Palmas de Gran Canarias.

The blue stripe at the bottom of the stamp alludes to the colours of the provincial flag.
