HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. TARRAGONA.

A new stamp will become part of the “12 months, 12 stamps” series launched by Correos in 2017 and featuring Spanish provinces, which will be used as a single type of postage for all parcels sent from post offices in the province featured on the stamp during the month of its issue. This time, the stamp is dedicated to Tarragona. As with the other stamps in the series, the province is represented with the letter T, evoking the old vehicle number plates in Spain.
Appearing in the letter are some of the most iconic items from the province:
Carquiñoles, called carquinyolis or carquinyols in Catalan, a type of sweet biscuit with almonds which is very traditional in Catalonia. They are made with flour, sugar, whole almonds and egg.
Castells, the famous human towers measuring several stories high that are traditional in the Camp de Tarragona area, dating back more than 200 years. They have been included on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Hazelnuts from Reus, source of 95% of the peninsula’s hazelnuts. They gained a Designation of Origin as DO Avellana de Reus in 1997.
Tarraco Amphitheatre, a 2nd century building located near the sea in a former cemetery. The stands carved into the rock seated some 14,000 spectators, and the famous gladiator fights with wild animals and public executions were held inside. It is part of the “Tarraco archaeological ensemble” World Heritage Site.
In the background of the stamp is an image of Playa Larga, a fine-sand beach stretching 600 metres in Salou. It is surrounded by woodland and a seaside promenade landscaped with Mediterranean plants and abundant flowers.
The red stripe at the bottom evokes the provincial flag.
