HISTORY

TOURISM. INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM FOR DEVELOPMENT

Tourism in Spain has seen highs and lows typical of the situation facing the country since the world economic crisis began a few years ago.
But 2016 was a splendid year for this sector in our country; we can even speak of a “tsunami of tourists” that visited numerous sites in Spain overtaking the United States as the world's second most visited country.
Stamps provide a showcase for displaying the bounties of the country they represent around the world and awakening people’s desire to visit in person.
Correos has been issuing its Tourism series since 2010, though it had already been one of the most recurring themes in stamp issues long before then.
This year's series is made up of stamps commemorating the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
The United Nations has declared 2017 the “International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development”, with the aim of raising awareness of this issue, putting special emphasis in promoting economic growth, social inclusion, employment and reduction of poverty, efficient use of resources, environmental protection and prevention of climate change, cultural values, diversity and heritage, and, last but not least, peace and security.
The two stamps feature a similar picture of footprints marked out on sand and snow respectively.
The picture of a beach with the sea in the background, represents the coastal tourism that tourists from all over the world find so attractive, thanks to our country’s climate.
The snowy mountain range recalls another type of tourism: snow, sports and nature.
Both stamps also feature the logo of this celebration, which is represented by a dandelion that starts to break up and fly through these two attractive landscapes.
