HISTORY

HUMANITARIAN AVIATION

For 50 years, the humanitarian agency that combats hunger around the world, WFP, has provided emergency food aid and worked to improve nutrition where it is most needed.
It helps 80 million people in over 80 countries via the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service by delivering both material and especially people to places that are remote, dangerous and hard to access by other types of transportation.
It also provides support in emergency situations caused by wars or natural disasters, sometimes dropping supplies from the air directly.
These aircraft undertake vitally important work, transporting the people who travel the world to help in countries where their presence is greatly needed.
The stamp dedicated by Correos to this organisation depicts a light aircraft flying over arid terrain. The propellers are formed by a cob of corn and an ear of wheat as a symbol of that vital aid.
Next to the aeroplane can be seen two sacks with the logo of the World Food Programme.
The stamp also includes red lettering with the words “Humanitarian Aviation”.
The GHAC was held in Madrid from19 to 21 October 2016, a conference that gathered a large number of air service providers from around the world alongside humanitarian aid professionals. Spain was chosen to host this event because, in recent years, thousands of Spaniards have been involved in Humanitarian Action and this was a way to honour their work, dedication and commitment to suffering people around the world.
This stamp is a tribute to the commendable work they do. Thanks to them, the situation in the world is a little less complicated.
