HISTORY

ANNIVERSARIES. 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALBACETE BULLRING.
A new stamp is being issued as part of the Anniversary series, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Albacete bullring, popularly known as “La Chata”.
On the occasion of the 1917 Fair, this bullring was inaugurated on 9 September with bulls from the cattle ranch of Fernando Villalón, fought by Rodolfo Gaona, José Gómez Gallito and Saleri II.
With a clear Mudejar influence, and a main entrance formed by a horseshoe arch, it is made of Novelda stone.
Albacete is a land of bullfighters, such as Chicuelo and Dámaso González, who have been honoured with individual monuments next to the bullring's main entrance. This monumental bullring is not only the venue of great popular celebrations, it is also a main tourist attraction.
In the month of September, as part of Albacete’s annual fiesta, a bullfighting fair is held, featuring leading figures of contemporary bullfighting, just as it was in the past.
In addition to these events, the bullring also hosts other events such as the Asprona Bullfight, where many matadors come together to raise funds for the Care Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities and their Families of the Province of Albacete.
The Cotolengo bullfighting festival also takes place in this bullring, in aid of the city’s Sacred Heart Charity Institution.
Like many other bullrings in Spain, and in keeping with its essence, this Castilla-La Mancha bullring is the setting for other types of shows such as concerts and festivals.
The stamp features a design comprised of two images of "La Chata": the first, a real photograph of the present-day bullring, and the second, a painting of the other side of the bullring, its façade, and figures from a bygone era. The past and present come together to celebrate this 100th anniversary.
