HISTORY

URBAN WORLD HERITAGE SITES. GRANADA
If there is one city known for its charm, famous throughout the world for its streets, monuments, food, landscape, and people, it is Granada.
The Alhambra, the Palacio de Generalife and the Albaicín neighbourhood are World Heritage Sites in Granada. The Alhambra and the Palacio de Generalife were listed as heritage sites in 1984; ten years later, a team of experts from UNESCO visited the Albaicín neighbourhood and decided to include it as well in this exclusive list.
Granada is the home of great poets and artists of every kind who find inspiration in this Andalusian city.
Granada is the home of universities, attracting thousands of young people every year who fill its lecture halls and are proud to receive their education in this friendly, welcoming city.
Granada is also a land of snow and mountain ranges, winter sports in the Sierra Nevada, a natural wall that protects it.
Granada is a land of cultures - Arab, Jewish and Christian - which have all left their mark.
The Alhambra rises above the Granada plain, separated from El Albaicín and the Palacio de Generalife by the Cuesta del Rey Chico.
The Alhambra and Palacio de Generalife complex epitomises Nasrid architecture and the Albaicín neighbourhood combines Islamic and Andalusian architecture.
El Albaicín and the Alhambra are complementaries, each providing a backdrop for the other. The Alhambra is embellished by El Albaicín and El Albaicín by the Alhambra.
Both these urban sites were seats of Muslim kingdoms or governments, surrounded by large walls that protected palaces and mosques from enemy invasions.
This mini sheet issued by Correos is a continuation of the Urban World Heritage Sites series and contains two stamps printed using a chalcography technique. Both stamps are details of an image of the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada in the background, taken from El Albaicín.
One of the stamps features the Torre de Comares while the other depicts part of the Palacios Nazaríes.
