HISTORY

ANNIVERSARIES. 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF UNICEF.

On 11 December 1946, the UN General Assembly created UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, to provide humanitarian assistance and bring hope to children all over the world whose lives are endangered by conflict, crisis, poverty, or inequality.
At the end of the Second World War, Europe had been devastated, and children, always the most vulnerable, were cold and hungry in many places.
UNICEF, originally called the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, earned the nickname “milkman to the world”, as it provided milk to millions of children.
This year is the 70th anniversary of its founding, but the celebration is bitter-sweet. When the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund was created seven decades ago, its members never thought it would still be in existence in our times - they were confident that the needs they covered would soon disappear.
Unfortunately, the world still suffers from war and conflict in many places, such as Syria, and natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods, as well as famine, epidemics, and other calamities continue to have a terrible effect on children.
Therefore, UNICEF also still exists, and it has been a lifeline for many people in the most difficult situations. Today it still carries out its urgent work around the world.
Although there is still a long way to go, it has achieved a great deal over its history. In the last 25 years it has more than halved preventable infant mortality, and the number of school-age children who do not go to school or receive any education has fallen by 40% since 1990.
The self-adhesive stamp which Correos has issued to mark this anniversary symbolises UNICEF’s mission to combat the suffering of children with several children’s hands together, children’s drawings, and the UNICEF logo.
