HISTORY

HUELVA. SPANISH CAPITAL OF GASTRONOMY 2017.

As in previous years, a province has been chosen to be the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2017. This year, the province selected is Huelva.
This is the first time a coastal province has been selected. The jury recognised the seafood cuisine, all those products that early each morning, are delivered by boat to the fish market, where they are selected to be transformed into exquisite dishes.
We cannot speak highly enough of the rose shrimp, cockles and baby squid, and cuttlefish, all select ingredients for classic local dishes.
However, Huelva not only serves up seafood, its inland produce includes ham from Jabugo, cold meats from Sierra de Aracena and also the world-famous strawberries.
The vegetable garden gives us traditional dishes such as chickpeas with spinach, “enzapatás” broad beans and the dishes prepared with local game and mushrooms, such as gurumelos.
It’s not all about food though. Huelva also produces wines that are worthy of mention, such as Vino Naranja del Condado de Huelva, with Designation of Origin.
Its dessert menu includes irresistible dishes such as chestnut soup, “poleas” and “huevos nevados”, a meringue and cream dessert.
For this and many other reasons, Huelva is worthy of carrying the title of Spanish capital of gastronomy around the globe this year and Correos, by dedicating a stamp to this event, as in previous years, aims to spread the word about our cuisine through a stamp that can travel and become a showcase to promote it.
The stamp issued features the logo of Huelva Capital Española de la Gastronomía 2017, which forms a fan featuring some of the typical products from the region: cuttlefish, ham, strawberries, shrimp and wine. Against a white background, these products are set off by a flourish of black cuttlefish ink that always adds a touch of elegance to the dishes.
