HISTORY

ICT. VIDEOGAMES

In 2017 the ICT issue dedicated to videogames is appearing for the third year in a row, this time paying homage to a Spanish videogame: La Abadía del Crimen, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
This issue is amini sheet with graphic illustrations from La Abadía del Crimen featuring thermochromic ink that lets you slide your finger over the mirrors (doors) and discover six different objects which are puzzles from the real game. The mini sheet also includes a nod to technological development, as one half looks like parchment paper and the other half like a television screen.
In 1987, computer systems had invaded Spanish homes and were there to stay. In one of those homes in the Ciudad de los Periodistas district of Madrid, a videogame was born that would break the mould.
The work of Paco Menéndez and Juan Delcán, “La Abadía del Crimen” went beyond reproducing the same formulas and dove into different aspects of the programming to give the videogame code a surprisingly high standard. Paco worked wonders with just 128 KB RAM on the Amstrad computer where his brilliance was first revealed.
Meanwhile, Delcán literally built the pillars supporting the architecture and graphics of an amazing videogame, noted for its complex, highly detailed design that impressed an entire generation of young players, who have never forgotten their immersive experience in this new video adventure, even 30 years later.
