HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. ÁVILA.

The walled city of Ávila is this month’s star of the series 12 months, 12 stamps, 12 provinces. This stamp will be used as a single type of postage for all parcels sent from the post offices in the featured province. The city is represented by the letters AV, with a collage of its most emblematic elements.

In the background we see the majestic walls of Ávila, the unmistakable image of the city. With 87 towers and 9 gates, they come with their fair share of legends, like any medieval monument. To get a view of the whole walled city, visitors can climb to the Cuatro Postes, for Doric columns connected by an architrave with the coat of arms of the city and a central cross.

Saint Teresa of Jesus. Nun, mystic and saint. Her teaching and experiences led her to become the first female Doctor of the Church. 15 October 2018 marked the end of the Teresian Jubilee Year which began on 15 October 2017.

There are references to the characteristic flora and fauna of the region, in the form of a rock rose and a Spanish ibex. The Sierra de Gredos mountains also feature, carved by glaciers over thousands of years.

And of course, local cuisine is honoured with an Ávila rib steak, and a traditional sweet of the province, dulces yemas, which seems to be Andalusian in origin. The ingredients are egg yolks, syrup, sugar, lemon and cinnamon.

Ávila is an enthralling province which should be explored at leisure, with time to enjoy every moment, village, building, legend…
