HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. GIRONA.

This month the series 12 months, 12 stamps continues as Correos issues a stamp dedicated to the province of Girona. This stamp will be used as a single type of postage for all parcels sent from the post offices in the featured province. In line with the previous issues it is represented with the letters GI, referring to the old vehicle number plates in Spain. The space within the letters shows significant elements of the province.

Duck. The mallard is a bird species that can be seen in the province as well as in the city of Girona.

Xuixo. This special sweet originated in the city of Girona in the 1920s. It appears to be a local adaptation of a French pastry called the "chou a la crème".

Salvador Dalí. Spanish 20th century painter, sculptor, etcher, stage designer, expert draughtsman and writer, he was one of the leading exponents of surrealism.

Dalí Museum. The Dalí Theatre-Museum, the largest surrealistic object in the world, is housed in

the former Municipal Theatre building. Dalí decided to build his museum in Figueres on its ruins.

Cadaqués. City located in the Alto Ampurdán region. This fishing village of white houses and narrow cobblestone streets full of plants and flowers has become one of the most desired snapshots for tourists from around the world.

Sardana. Catalonia is known worldwide for this traditional group dance, done in a circle.

Girona Cathedral. Consecrated to Saint Mary, it is located at the city's highest point.

Girona. It is crossed by the Ter, Güell, Galligants and Oñar Rivers. Its historic district is one of the most charming in Catalonia.

The fly that appears on the yellow strip across the bottom, representing the colour of the provincial flag, is a symbol of the city. According to legend, during the siege of Girona by the troops of Phillipe the Bold, swarms of flies emerged from the tomb of Saint Narcís and attacked the French soldiers.
