HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. NAVARRE.

With the initials NA, alluding to the former provincial number-plates, Correos issues a new stamp in the series 12 months, 12 stamps, 12 provinces. During this month. This stamp will be used as a single type of postage for all parcels sent from the post offices in the featured province. Some of the elements that most represent Navarre are shown inside the letters which dominate the stamp.

San Fermines. Originally a medieval religious festival, today this event is more like a party. The colours white and red, and bulls, are the most iconic elements of this world-renowned fiesta.

Rosé wine. Two of the most famous Designations of Origin for rosé wines are Cigales and Navarra, both from the province.

Planetarium. Yamaguchi Park is home to this centre of scientific and technological culture and education, where visitors can almost literally immerse themselves in astronomy and the mysteries of the universe.

Bearded vulture. This species is known in Spain as the Quebrantahuesos or bone-breaker, because it drops carrion bones or shells from a great height to break them before it eats them.

Witch. The silhouette on the stamp alludes to the era when the Inquisition appeared in over 60 villages in Navarre, such as Sangüesa and Lumbier, and accused some of the locals of witchcraft.

Royal Palace of Olite. The court of the Kings of Navarre, this was one of Europe’s most luxurious medieval castles. It was declared a National Monument in 1925.

Beech tree. A deciduous tree from the family Fagaceae, which can grow up to 45 metres tall, and is found in abundance throughout the province of Navarre.

Bárdenas Reales. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The erosion of its clay, chalk and sandstone soil has sculpted fanciful shapes which evoke a lunar landscape.

Asparagus. These ambassadors of Navarre are easily recognisable by their white colour, smooth and juicy texture, and delicious flavour.

Irati Forest. This is Europe’s second largest beech and fir forest, and the best conserved. This immense green carpet, around 17,000 hectares, is almost untouched.

The lower red stripe alludes to the provincial flag.
