HISTORY

Correos issues a new stamp as part of the 12 stamps, 12 months, 12 provinces series, dedicated to the province of Toledo. This stamp will be used as a single type of postage for all parcels sent from the post offices in the featured province. It is represented by the letters TO, alluding to the vehicle number plates once used in Spain and a selection of the most iconic elements of the province.

Manhole cover. The province has many iron and steel foundries. The image also recalls its famous swords.

Marzipan from Toledo. This sweet, made from raw almonds that are peeled and ground, then mixed with different types of sugars, received a Protected Geographical Indication in 2002.

Dulzaina. This double reed instrument belongs to the oboe family, and is often used in traditional Spanish compositions.

Don Quixote. Cervantes paid homage to Toledo, a province he admired. Chapter IX of his master work is fully dedicated to the city.

Alcázar. This fortification is the quintessential symbol of Toledo. The current building was begun by Emperor Carlos V and is currently home to the Army Museum.

Saffron. The stigmas of the beautiful saffron flower are toasted to create this product. It has PDO Azafrán de la Mancha. Known as “red gold”,it is one of the world’s most expensive spices.

Windmills of Consuegra. This windmills that dot the hillsides of Consuegra inspired Cervantes’s famous Tilting at Windmills episode in his novel Don Quixote.

El Greco. The renowned painter settled in Toledo in 1577, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.

Red-legged partridge. This bird with a strong neck, short tail and slightly curved beak is often found in Toledo province

Stone lion. Representing the Santa María Cathedral of Toledo, this detail is found on its most modern portal.

The green strip along the bottom pays tribute to the province’s flag.
