HISTORY

12 MONTHS, 12 STAMPS. ZAMORA

The series 12 months, 12 stamps, 12 provinces continues with a new issue dedicated to Zamora. This stamp will be used this month as a single type of postage for all mailings from post offices in the featured province. It is represented by the letters ZA, alluding to the vehicle number plates once used in Spain. Zamora is a magical place, full of history and stories hidden in every nook and cranny. Zamora smells of wine, culture, incense and nature. Zamora sounds like water, birds and drums. The stamp includes some of the most important elements of the province.

Iberian wolf. Nature is one of Zamora’s great draws and the Iberian wolf is one of its biggest stars. It is medium in size and can have grey, ochre or reddish fur.

Stone bridge. One of the five bridges that cross the Duero River in the capital. It is one of the symbols of the city, and an obligatory route in the Middle Ages for the passage of people, livestock and goods, as it was part of the Vía de la Plata.

Zamoran cheese. It is made with pasteurised or unpasteurised milk from Churra and Castellana sheep. It is a pressed-curd cheese and has had Designation of Origin since 1993.

Easter. One of the most well-known holidays in Spain. The recollection, the light and the ritual chants of the Miserere fill the streets of Zamora each year during these days of penance.

Traditional Costume. It is one of the most beautiful in Castille and León. The costume shown in the image won first prize at the First World Folklore Festival of Bavaria in Germany.

Cathedral. In Romanesque style with three naves and three apses, this holy building consecrated to El Salvador took 23 years to build. It was declared a National Monument in 1889.

River Duero. The city of Zamora is reflected in this river as it passes through the city. Herons pose elegantly in its waters, making it a recognised symbol of the city.

The red strip along the bottom recalls the provincial flag.
