HISTORY

50th Anniversary of FAMET

23 June 2016 marked the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Spanish Army Airmobile Force (FAMET). This military unit began as the Light Aviation Company, created in 1965, which was the Spanish Army's first helicopter unit, taking over from the Military Aerostat and Aviation Service.

The anniversary coincides with the date when the first helicopters arrived at “Los Remedios” airbase in Colmenar Viejo (Madrid), now the “Coronel Maté” airbase, on 23 June 1966.

After a consolidation phase and the creation of different battalions distributed throughout Spain, the history of FAMET is notable for its continuous participation in the Spanish Army’s operations abroad, from the UN’s 1991 “Provide Comfort” operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan region to the present day, again in Iraq, with a helicopter unit deployed near Baghdad in May 2018 as part of the Spanish contribution to the Global Coalition against Da’esh. FAMET has also participated in numerous deployments in the Balkans, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and other locations.

All the Army’s helicopter units form part of Spanish Army Aviation, and share the anniversary: the units in FAMET and those in other Army Commands and Support Commands (the Army Aviation Academy, the Helicopter Storage and Maintenance Centre, and the 6th Manoeuvre Helicopter Battalion of the Canary Islands Command). Its personnel perform activities relating to the Command, preparation, security, and employment in the Army units with aviation resources.

This brings the Spanish Army to the same level as most of its neighbouring armed forces, with which it shares operations, who have their own Army Aviation - in other words, helicopter units that form part of the terrestrial army and that carry out aviation missions as an essential part of terrestrialoperations.
