HISTORY

AMERICA UPAEP

The Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (UPAEP) was founded in 1911 by Francisco García y Santos, Director General of the Uruguay Post Office, to promote and defend postal services.

Since 1989, the UPAEP member countries have issued a philatelic series with stamps based on a common theme. This year the subject is domestic animals.

Spain’s stamp has an original design with a die-cut in the shape of a dog’s kennel. It folds out to show an illustration of a dog, the most popular pet in Spanish households.

Man’s best friend is the ideal companion for children and adults alike. They say there is a breed of dog for everyone, as each breed has different characteristics that can suit the personalities of different owners.

As well as keeping us company, dogs can be heroes, rescuing people trapped in fires, collapsed buildings, or even water. Others work hard as police dogs, helping to solve many crimes, especially those relating to drug smuggling. And last but not least, there are guide dogs, which make life easier for blind or visually impaired people.

Dogs have often featured in Spanish and international philately. For example, they are among the most popular subjects in the United States. There have also been many European stamps featuring these loyal and intelligent animals.

Domestic animals in general, and dogs in particular, make good company, just like stamps.

With this new issue, Correos again shows its interest in innovative stamp design, and also shares the mission of UPAEP to improve and expand the postal market, applying new technologies and the latest elements in stamp creation.
