HISTORY

H.M. THE KING OF SPAIN'S BIRTHDAY.

The King of Spain, Felipe VI, was born on 30 January 1968 at the Nuestra Señora de Loreto Clinic in Madrid.

His father, King Juan Carlos I, was the heir to the Spanish crown at the time. His birth was quite an event because, although he was the third child of the then Prince Juan Carlos and Sofía, he was the first boy.

King Felipe was always aware of the importance of his role in Spain. He received a full academic education in languages and international relations. He was still a child when he gave his first speech at the Prince of Asturias Award ceremony in 1981, thereby demonstrating he was perfect for the role.

He completed his military studies at the Zaragoza Military Academy and continued this training at the Marín Naval Military Academy and the San Javier General Air Force Academy.

As his father remarked on the day he abdicated in 2014, “of all the Princes of Asturias there have been in the history of Spain, he is the best prepared, even if I say so myself and that looks boastful, but I am boastful of my own son”.

Over the course of his first 50 years, Felipe of Borbón and Greece has shown the world his savoir faire, capacity for dialogue and duty and pride towards Spain.

He has kept up a high profile ever since he was crowned king, visiting and receiving major figures from all corners of the world.

He is joined by Queen Letizia in carrying the name of Spain around the world and thereby fostering relations with the rest of the international community.

Felipe VI is celebrating his 50th birthday with many duties already accomplished and many more still ahead, always in the best interests of his country.

This issued stamp shows an official portrait of the king against a silver foil background.
